LeBron James and the Nike LeBron 12 has been the most successful sneaker of any among the NBA’s signature kicks. Better than Kevin Durant‘s Nike KD series. Better than Kobe‘s series. Better than many of the others–like Stephen Curry and Under Armour, and Damian Lillard and adidas–combined. Outside of Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan series, which doesn’t really count anymore considering the GOAT retired over 10 years ago, LeBron has been THE defining character among sports figures for sneakerheads. He’s one of the culture’s most influential figures, someone who resonates with fans both young and old.
And while MJ worked to keep distance between the public and himself, using that gulf as a means to promote how “cool” he was, LeBron is the exact opposite. It’s part of the climate; in 2015, everyone is online and on social media. LeBron is no different. You could argue that he’s one of the best athletes to follow on Instagram, and a huge part of why Nike sold $340 million worth of his signature kicks in 2014–nearly double what Durant did–is LeBron’s use of the ‘gram to promote it.
Tomorrow will mark the release of yet another LeBron 12 colorway at Champs Sports. This one has been dubbed “Cleveland” for obvious reasons. The shoe features golden mesh with black carbon fiber Hyperposite wings, along with a translucent sole and red accenting on the Swoosh branding, the laces, lining, and pull-tab.
