The Prequel: September Sneaker Releases That You Can’t Miss

  • Timberland 6 inch boot
    Timberland 6" Premium Boot

    Release Date: September 4

School is back and the weather will be changing to autumn before you know it. Having a few pairs of Timberland boots isn’t an option anymore. It’s a necessity. Seriously, this look has such a long history in the culture that it’s surprising when you find a sneakerhead without a few pairs in their closet. This red look hits hard, too.

  • Air Jordan 9 Anthracite
    Air Jordan IX "Anthracite"

    Release Date: September 5

This is already being hailed as perhaps the best Air Jordan IX silhouette ever made. All black just works for this shoe, and it’s an interesting take considering many of Michael Jordan‘s IX cleats–which he wore often during his expedition to Minor League Baseball-came in only black. With a nubuck black upper and white eyelets, this one bears a striking resemblance to a popular Oregon Ducks exclusive, at least minus the Duck logo. With that being said, people should still be thankful considering most never expected this colorway to drop for the public.

  • adidas ZX Flux
    adidas ZX Flux "Snakeskin"

    Release Date: September 7

One of my favorite silhouettes of the past few years is getting yet another makeover. The “Snakeskin” print upper is handled deftly and when you contrast it with the white sole, the shoe should pop with both shorts and pants. This shoe never swings and misses.

A second colorway of the same design will also be available. With the versatility this silhouette possesses, why not cop both?

  • Nike CJ3 Flyweave Trainer Lions
    Nike CJ3 Flyweave Trainer "Lions"

    Release Date: September 11

The lifestyle trainer for one of the NFL’s ultimate weapons, Calvin Johnson’s CJ3 Flyweave Trainer has released in some of the craziest colorways I’ve ever seen. You know the designers are thinking outside of the box when one edition called “Paintball” is probably the tamest version yet. Until now. This Lions colorway brings the shoe full-circle, showing how dope it can look when the subtle is spotlighted. Sporting a lower profile and hexagonal Zoom Air pods on the outsole, this trainer should find its way into a number of gyms this year.

  • Nike Kobe X Elite Low
Nike Kobe X Elite Low "Mambacurial"

    Release Date: September 12

Nike and Kobe Bryant last incorporated the “Mambacurial” theme into their line with the Kobe 8. But once again they’re taking advantage of Bryant’s unique love for soccer by combining it with a Mercurial boot influence. In this edition, pink helps highlight a Flyknit upper of greys and blacks, and the smaller Swoosh branding on the medial toe helps drive home the theme. Only the very best of us can rock pink successfully. It might be time to test yourself.

  • Nike Kyrie 1 Green Glow
    Nike Kyrie 1 "Green Glow"

    Release Date: September 16

The best of this year’s newest signature basketball sneakers is still going strong all these months and colorways later. This one features a black and reflective silver upper that’s contrasted by Green Glow along the heel. I love rocking grey sneakers on the court, and these are one of the best pairs I’ve seen in a long time. It’s the perfect sneaker to cop for preseason.

In college, I always looked forward to September. Yeah, going back to classes wasn’t always fascinating, but hey, everything else about college was super lit. It wasn’t just the girls, the food, the basketball. There was something else that always got me hyped for school: the kicks.

I won’t give you the scoop–the hunt is part of the fun of this culture–but just know that I went to school in a “city” that wasn’t anywhere close to a “real” city. Basically, as far as sneaker culture goes, it wasn’t exactly popping…and yet because there weren’t any other viable options around, some store had to secure that limited sneaker account, right? Luckily, me and my boys discovered a hidden shop that got just about every release possible. Perfect example: This was back in 2006 when we copped the super-hard-to-get Air Jordan V “Grape” retro mad easy. I’m talking waking up at 9:30, getting to the store at 10, and being the second person in line. Wild.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that September and the Back to School vibes it brings is one of the best months of the year for hitting the mall and finding some fresh kicks. A ton of them are releasing and–hopefully–you saved up money this summer to have your classroom fits looking fresh.

From a “Snakeskin” print of the adidas ZX Flux to perhaps the best version of the Air Jordan IX you’ll ever see, you can’t miss these release dates this month. It’s not an option. It’s a necessity if you want to keep up with the tastemakers and the trendsetters. This is The Prequel and these are the September Sneaker Releases That You Can’t Miss.
