Above the Rim will forever be one of the greatest basketball movies ever, and growing up it didn’t matter how many coaches told me it was awful or how many “chaperones” told me it was inappropriate. Joint was just dope, with a killer soundtrack, great actors, a decent storyline, and classic (if unrealistic) basketball highlights.
One of the movie’s most iconic scenes? That had to be Duane Martin’s character learning the truth about the connection between Thomas Shepard and Birdie. Birdie, played by Tupac Shakur, was all done up in one of the craziest head-to-toe camo outfits I’d ever seen. He even rocked the matching boots and bandana.
Now I can’t say I went with a similar look on the first day of college as some weird ode to ‘Pac. But I can say that I had the Champs Sports camo T-shirts on lock back in the day. In fact, I wore them so often that some professor gave me the nickname “Sarge.”
With all the homies living on the same floor as me, we picked up a nickname in the process: the Second Floor Soldiers. Walking to the courts. Coming back to the dorm room. Heck, even on the court at times…we were always rocking the camo fits.
In 2015, camouflage gear is still popping. From Kanye to Pharrell to Rihanna to even Jay Z, cats are finding ways to incorporate the look into modern style. And while I had an assortment of camo T-shirts, camouflage always looks best on streetwear gear aimed at the colder months. Zip-up jackets. Hoodies. Pants. Thankfully, in the latest Game Plan collection from Champs Sports, we’ll be getting all of that.
Featuring three distinct camo colors arraigned on Nike Tech Fleece and Tech Pants, you’ll be able to choose your own weapon. Add in the black (or white) colorway of the Nike Free Hypervenom 2 lifestyle sneaker to complete the fit or, better yet, go with the new Nike Hyperfr3sh to really stand above the rest.
For the high school athlete that’s trying to stay just as fresh off the field as on it, camo is the move to make this Back to School season.
Check out the Champs Sports store and cop the collection today.

For some of us, wearing camouflage just isn’t loud enough. Go harder with the full blue outfit. Top it all off with the new Hyperfr3sh from Nike, one of the best lifestyle silhouettes we’ve seen from the Swoosh since the Roshe Run. All three components of this look are stylish enough to wear on their own, so mix and match to make sure you’re looking fly.
NIKE TECH FLEECE CAMO FULL ZIP – $200
NIKE CAMO TECH PANT- $119.99
NIKE HYPERFR3SH- $85
Cop the classic colorway to rock away from the gym. Then, combine the look with the black version of the Nike Free Hypervenom 2, a sneaker that took inspiration from a soccer boot and yet still acts as a true lifestyle release.
Finally, if either of the first two isn’t working for you, go the black route with this clean outfit. Then, you can set it off with a white version of the Hypervenom 2. In an age when everyone is trying to rock all-black everything, that alone might be enough to set you apart.
