At this point, it’s not exactly a secret anymore: DJ Khaled has been a big sneakerhead for a long, long time. In fact, he’s been rocking kicks since he “came out his momma’s stomach.” His personal closet isn’t just a collection of untouched heat stuffed inside crumbling boxes. It’s a premium showcase that took him years to build, with a setup that any sneakerhead–from your favorite streetwear influencer to your favorite professional athlete–would be envious of.
You probably already knew all of that. But I doubt you knew his first job was actually with Champs Sports. Yep, back in the day, Khaled was just a kid grinding to make it, and so he would drop his mixtape into every sneaker box he sold. I think it’s safe to say all of the hustle paid off for the music mogul.
In 2015, Khaled is now one of the biggest–and most entertaining–personalities in music. When he got the chance to reunite with Champs Sports this holiday season, there was no way he was saying no. At the Mall of America on set of his latest commercial with Andrew Wiggins of the Minnesota Timberwolves, we caught up with the man himself to talk about his sneakerhead story in Episode 10 of The Drop video series.
From getting an exclusive first look at Stephen Curry‘s latest Under Armour signature sneaker to checking out Kyrie Irving‘s new signature PSD underwear collection, The Drop video series has been all about giving a voice to that unique spot in streetwear culture where music, sports, sneakers, and style all intertwine. You can check all of the full episodes at the Champs Sports YouTube page and in the future, if you want to be involved, hit those Instagram sneaker pictures with the hashtag #MyGameMondays for a chance to be featured in a future episode.
DJ Khaled promised us he’ll be rocking sneakers until he’s 100 years old, so who knows how big that sneaker room is going to get? That at least will give you a lot of time to catch up to him.
