The Come Up: May’s Freshest Style Trends

There’s been a lot of recent talk about what’s popping and what isn’t among style trends for the spring and summer. I can’t say much of it surprises me. Joggers are now mainstream, being searched on Google most often in khaki and black. But what did surprise me was a recent report that young kids don’t want to wear jeans anymore. I guess there’s a first time for everything.

We already told you about tailored track pants making a comeback this year and that’s more relevant than ever right now. We also predicted knit shorts would be hitting harder than they ever have over the last few years. We were right again.

Every month, The Drop hits you with The Prequel, a mashup of the sneakers each month that you can’t miss out on. However, this is the first time we’re also veering out to give you a heads up on the rest of your look. That’s because even the hottest kicks can be undone by dad jeans or the wrong sock choice. For May, we picked out five looks that’ll keep you fly as we head into the end of the school year and the start of summer.

This is the first official edition of The Come Up. See below for May’s Freshest Style Trends.

1. NIKE SQUAD SHORT (AKA MEXICAN BLANKET)
With summer here, make sure you’re ready to dress down and get casual. Cookouts and pool parties are perhaps the best parts of summer vacation, but if you want to separate yourself from the rest of your inner circle, don’t show up wearing basketball shorts. You can’t show up in cargo shorts, either. And definitely don’t rock any jorts. According to Google, joggers have now entered the mainstream. Right now, there’s nothing hotter than a dope pair of joggers. So upgrade your look with the warmer weather in mind with the Nike Squad Shorts, available at Champs Sports for around $65. They feature drawstrings for a custom fit and multiple pockets for storage. Combine these with a pair of Air Max 90s and you’ll be straight.

2. NIKE ROSHE FADE
If you’re not big on wearing some 90s and 95s–I can’t blame you because I also enjoy other silhouettes more–check out the Fade edition of the Nike Roshe Run. The Roshe became a classic almost overnight when it first released a few years ago and it’s influence can be seen everywhere, from the adidas ZX Flux to even the leaked images of the upcoming low-top version of the Yeezys. Grab this colorway at Champs Sports and match it with some gradient shorts and branded T-shirts.

3. NIKE SPORTSWEAR LIGHTWEIGHT CUFFED PANTS
Cats my age grew up on jeans. They were all we wore. But guess what? Times are changing and even the New York Times published a story recently about how many young kids literally refuse to wear jeans. Instead, it’s all about fitted track pants and lightweight sweats and joggers. Available at Champs Sports for $55, these joints are must-haves for summer. We all know, especially with how unpredictable the weather is nowadays, that not every day is going to be sunny and 90 degrees out. Show your versatility by combining a pair of all-white Nikes with the lightweight pants.

4. NIKE SPORTSWEAR POLKA DOT FLEECE SHORTS
The 1MM AOP edition of the Nike Tech Fleece shorts is a great way to dress up what could otherwise be something you wear to the gym. With innovative thermal construction, a stretch waist, and storage pockets, this fit is stylish enough to wear out on a date to the movies and yet casual enough that you’ll fit right in should you put in a little time by the beach. The shorts are available right now for $80 and you can take the casual, sophisticated look to the next level by combining it with a floral snapback or bucket hat.

5. ADIDAS LIGHTWEIGHT JOGGERS
The thing that makes adidas joggers so attractive is that many of the brand’s best new silhouettes look absolutely phenomenal when you combine the two. Whether it’s the Flux or the Tubular or the Pure Boost 2.0 doesn’t matter. Their low cuts and sleek uppers give them a certain appeal that can’t be maximized unless you’re combining them with lightweight fleece joggers, as we did here with the Flux.
