Style Points: Reggie Bush, LeBron James, and RiFF RAFF Go Old School

  • Reggie Bush

Remember when we showed you Bush’s history of breaking ankles? He doesn’t do it as much anymore but in Detroit’s recent 13-12 preseason win over Jacksonville, the former USC star busted out the track shoes and put on a show with an 86-yard touchdown.

Dropping a nasty cut-back at the line of scrimmage and then outracing everyone else up the sideline, this was a reminder of what Bush used to be able to do. He made this one look easy.

  • Lance Stephenson
    Lance Stephenson

We had no idea Lance could spit. Recently, he hopped behind the mic and dropped a nice freestyle over the beat for Bobby Shmurda‘s hit single, “Hot N****.”

It’s not like the Hornets offseason signee is dropping gems about his rough childhood in Coney Island, his Born Ready status, or his beef with the best player in the world. However, he did recite some really catchy lines, like this one: “I been ballin’ hard since like the 5th grade/Watchin’ A.I. gettin’ 40 with the French braids.”

You can’t really screw up this beat from Jahlil Beats, but Stephenson didn’t embarrass himself at all.

  • Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt has been in the news a lot lately. He made his return at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and added another gold medal to his trophy case. Then his birthday came and went — with The Drop featuring five well-known athletic animals that aren’t fast enough to beat the fastest human being ever. Now he’s broken the 100m indoor record, destroying the competition at the LOTTO Kamila Skolimowska Memorial race in Poland by running a 9.98 to break a nearly 20-year-old record.

Before you look at that time and say wow, Bolt is getting slower, remember that all times indoor are slow — no wind assistance and no spikes. Dude still set a world record.

That wasn’t even the best part of the day, though. Bolt showed up to the race in a Humvee with NBA player Marcin Gortat, who is as eccentric as they come and consistently does crazy stuff like this. What a combo.

  • Air Jordan 3

The sneaker painter gawd is back at it again, dropping two more sick customs, including one exclusively for Dwyane Wade. First up are the shoes featured above, a pair of all-gold-painted Air Jordan 3s, with a 5Lab3 base. With a high gold glossy finish, Mache is literally asking the question: Who said all-gold Jordans were only for Drake and Usher?

He wasn’t finished, however, lacing D-Wade with a custom of Wade’s signature sneaker. The shoe features a collection of yellows, blues, and reds, and goes to the next level with that amazing material being used on the inner lining.

  • Katy Perry, RiFF RAFF
    Katy Perry, RiFF RAFF

When these two showed up at the 2014 VMAs, my social media channels blew up. Taking inspiration from the old, show-stopping matching outfits once rocked by Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, the all-denim worn on the red carpet by RiFF RAFF and Katy Perry was the talk of the show. Unparalleled swag exhibited here by the Freestyle Scientist.

Not much to say about this one that isn’t being said in all ‘dat denim, but here you go Jody. Have all of our style points, forever and ever.

  • LeBron James

LeBron’s bringing back the chalk toss! Well, maybe.

James hinted at the return on his Instagram page, posting a quick video and writing “I swear I can’t wait for this moment again!!” So it sure sounds like he’ll be bringing back his signature pregame move now that he’s finally back home in Cleveland. Basketball fans — and NBA 2K15 fans — everywhere can rejoice.

The NFL regular season is here and everyone is gearing up for Sunday afternoons. Hopefully you have your jerseys and your sneakers and your food and snacks and new TVs all set to go. Hopefully you’ve drafted your fantasy squads. Hopefully your team isn’t the St. Louis Rams and hopefully you haven’t lost your starting franchise quarterback for the season … again. (Get better, Sam Bradford.) Fans of Reggie Bush, however, don’t have any reason to worry. This guy is ready to go.

Bush, and others like LeBron James, are getting highlighted here in Style Points for somewhat different reasons. Back in the day at USC, Bush was a monster, a highlight reel that routinely ended up as the top play on SportsCenter. Since coming to the NFL, the Lions tailback has lost some speed and gained some muscle in an effort to be an every-down back. It’s worked for the most part, but rarely do we see him break off a long run like he did recently against Jacksonville. Along with Bush this week is LeBron, who’s returned to Cleveland and seems like he’s preparing to bring some of the glory days back with him.

Then there was RiFF RAFF, who took it all the way back at the VMAs with Katy Perry.

Today, we’re breaking down our weekly Style Points, which highlights not what players — athletes and entertainers — have done but how they’ve done it. From Lance to LeBron, all of the following people did it big, even as some turned back the clock while others pushed it forward.
