Style Points: Oregon Is College Football’s Swagger King; the Hawks Are the NBA’s Most Surprising Team

    Earl Thomas

One of the leaders of the NFL’s best defense — yep, they are basically right back to the level they were at last year — Earl Thomas recently shut the game down with these ridiculous Air Jordan XII player exclusive cleats. He’s been in the limelight for a long time because of his kicks, but these neon green-based joints are going next level. Too flashy for most of us to handle.

  • Theo Zidane

This name probably sounds familiar to you. That’s because Theo Zidane is the 12-year-old son of current soccer legend Zinedine Zidane and he’s taking over the soccer game for Real Madrid right now. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a move like this from an elementary school kid. Keep your eyes peeled in the future for the lil’ man.

  • Michael Porter Jr.

The No. 5-ranked player in the 2017 ESPN 25, Porter Jr. is only four years older than Theo Zidane. He’s a 6-9 shooter that some are already calling “Baby KD.” What separates him from a lot of other kids who grow early is that he actually has athleticism to add to the skills. Just check out this recent dunk he had that nearly broke the Internets.

What are they feeding these kids?

  • Andrew Wiggins

Keeping with the young’n theme, here’s Andrew Wiggins doing what he does best, soaring above the competition and catching a lob at the top of the box against Utah. Despite losing to the Jazz, the No. 1 pick put up 21 more points, exactly his average over his last 10 games. Yes, even after that weak start to the season, Wiggins is one of those guys who is going to explode in 2015.

We’re sorry, Matthew Dellavedova, but you got yanked something bad right here. This could be used as a representative of Cleveland’s entire performance on this night in Atlanta. Without LeBron in the lineup, the team turned in another lousy defensive effort and lost by eight to fall to 18-13. (They’ve since fallen to 19-19.) Giving up nearly 51 percent shooting against Atlanta? When will the Cavs turn it around?

In the meantime, Jeff, have ALL of these style points.

I can’t be the only one surprised that Ohio State took out the top-ranked team in the nation in Alabama to advance to this year’s College Football Championship Game. Down 21-6 at one point, it didn’t seem possible. But the Buckeyes were doing impossible things all night.

The best play came in the closing seconds of the first half when wide receiver Michael Thomas made this incredible catch off a fake reverse. Between getting his foot down to the perfect pass from fellow wideout Evan Spencer, this might’ve been the best play of the college football bowl season.

Not only did the Ducks SMASH Florida State and Jameis Winston in the College Football Playoff Semifinals, ending the ‘Noles 29-game winning streak, but they’re going to be setting trends in tonight’s College Football Championship Game.

Against Ohio State, Oregon will take the field to play for a national title…without wearing their school colors. They’ll be decked out in white uniforms with tonal gray and silver accents, along with wolf grey pants and a silver-winged white helmet. While the sleeve of the jersey will have the “Fighting Ducks” silver logo and the pants will feature the “Fighting Ducks” words down the legs, this is something completely new in college sports. Props to Oregon for thinking outside of the box, as they always do. I guarantee there are a lot of high school prospects who’ll see these uniforms tonight and say, “I want to go there.”

After months of upsets, hard hits, and SportsCenter-worthy highlight-reel plays, tonight’s College Football Championship Game between No. 2 Oregon and No. 4 Ohio State will determine it all. I think it’s safe to say there weren’t many experts who had these two schools pegged last summer as the two teams to beat but alas here we are, 60 minutes from crowning a new national champion in the first championship game since 2005 to not feature a team from the SEC.

Oregon made it here on the strength of Marcus Mariota‘s talent, but it was a total team shutdown of Florida State during the semifinals. Ohio State made it here mostly through incorporating a stylish, speed-oriented offense that blitzed Alabama all night during their semifinal, but to beat the Ducks they might have to beat them at their own game.

However, in Style Points, it’s never about what you do but how you do it and both of these schools showed off some serious swagger in their respective College Football Playoff wins.

Ohio State’s Michael Thomas made the play of the bowl season with an incredible catch just before the halftime buzzer. Meanwhile, Oregon is planning to make the biggest splash of all tonight with some trendsetting uniforms.

They weren’t the only ones making waves, recently, though. Riding Derrick Jones‘ wave of momentum, high schooler Michael Porter Jr. set the Internet on fire with a ridiculous dunk that topped just about everything over the past few weeks, outside of 2015 breakout star Andrew Wiggins‘ alley-oop finish in Utah. Overall, there were more highlights recently than we knew what to do with.
