Style Points: Game-Winners, PEs & Pet Pigs

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

It pains me to write this. It really does.

On Sunday afternoon, the U.S. shut down the soccer’s world perfect villain, turning Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo into a sideshow. After over 90 minutes of play, he had Twitter all but calling him out as overrated, echoing media around the world who have been turned off by Ronaldo’s arrogance over the last few years.

Yet after watching and listening to some of the bashing, I was reminded of an old Michael Jordan quote from a Gatorade commercial: “It’s not how hard you push along the way, it’s having something in you to finish.” CR took that to heart, literally stabbing our hearts with the cross-kick from Heaven. It was a perfect pass and ruined what would’ve been a perfect afternoon for the U.S.

You get roughed up and shut down all game… then show up in the final 10-15 seconds and do this? That’s next level.

    Shane Victorino

Boston’s Shane Victorino is consistently bringing out heat. He’s a regular customer of sneaker artist Mache, and now, thanks to @JohnGeiger_, we got a look at the right fielder’s one-of-one all-red Nike Zoom Revis PE.

Victorino is a huge Bob Marley fan; “Three Little Birds” plays when he comes up to bat. On these sneakers, the 33-year-old makes them his own by incorporating a famous Marley lyric on the strap: “Don’t worry about a thing, ‘cause every little thing gonna be all right.”

    Marcin Gortat

As Bradley Beal told us recently, Washington’s starting center is a character. Apparently, when he’s not bumping some type of fist-pumping music, Marcin Gortat goes shopping…with his pet pig?

Over the weekend, the Polish center went sneaker shopping and brought the lil’ guy with him, then snapped a photo for Instagram, writing: “Im telling yalllll ….Im unreal with some things in poland !!! Right here chilling with my puppy in shoping center in poland!”

You’ve gotta have some serious swag to not bring a pet pig on a leash with you to go shopping. That’s something 99.9 percent of us will never experience.

  • Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi was a savage during Argentina’s 3-2 win over Nigeria earlier this week, scoring within the first five minutes of the game and then adding a ridiculous goal–on a free kick–in stoppage time just before the end of the first half.

There wasn’t much debate before this one on who the best player in the world is, and after watching the show Messi put on during the tournament’s first three games (four goals), only a fool would argue anything otherwise.

Messi does it with style, and yet half his goals seem to come from out of nowhere. There’s no one more fun to watch… not only is he the best but he is also the most entertaining.

That’s how you make an entrance. Wiggins introduced himself to the NBA world with one of the craziest draft-night suits we’ve ever seen. The minute the floral jacket and bow-tie combo started making the rounds on Twitter, it was obvious: Wiggins, whether he went No. 1 to the Cavs or not, had won the NBA Draft. In a fitting capper, Cleveland took the 6-8 wing, choosing potential over a sure thing (Jabari Parker) and healthy over hurt (Joel Embiid).

Wiggins’ charismatic entrance is hopefully a sign of things to come. The Cavs need some hope. Wiggins should provide it. You know, at the very least, Russell Westbrook was sitting at home rubbing his hands together, knowing he has some competition.

It’s not always about what you do but how you do it. That’s true in all aspects of life, but doubly so when you’re talking about sports and entertainment. Was 2Pac one of the greatest rappers ever because he sold boatloads of records worldwide? No. He was a global icon for what he stood for, for his passion, for everything and everyone he represented.

Each week in Style Points, we’ll count down recent people who took their game and their swagger to another level. Whether it was dropping a game-tying assist, rocking a super elusive PE or bringing your pet pig to the mall, these three went above and beyond.
