Style Points: Daddy Adventures and Showstoppers

  • Jamaal Charles
    Jamaal Charles

Jamaal Charles earns his style points this week after signing a two-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirms that the RB will earn $18.1 million in new money and an extra $5 million over the next two years. Becoming the second-highest paid running back in the NFL is surely worthy of some style points, not to mention his paycheck this year increased by over 100 percent ($3.9M to $8.3M). That type of raise, combined with the skill to rush for close to 6,000 yards in six seasons, AND being able to rock cut-off jeans while sitting on a cannon definitely deserves countless style points.

  • LeBron James

There’s been lots of hype around LeBron lately, and in fact he even claimed a spot on our style points list a few weeks ago. However, this week he makes the list for a different reason — along with two other superstars on our list, he earns his style points for being a dad. I know it’s tough, sometimes I, too, forget that these athletes have families, especially someone like LeBron whose family gets lost in his limelight. That being said, LeBron has a son who, in mid-July, competed in the fourth grade AAU Division I championship tournament in Lexington. Watch the video above and you’ll see LeBron Sr. get overly excited, just as any classic basketball dad would if his kid took it into the paint and completed the and-1 play. It’s surprisingly refreshing to see something like this; as Trinidad James would say, “Don’t believe me, just watch.”

  • Sidney Rice
    Sidney Rice

Sidney Rice makes the list this week for having an NFL career that lasted only seven years. Yes, that sounds odd, but Rice deserves style points for having the maturity to retire at the age of 27. The Seattle Seahawks receiver has already won a Super Bowl, however, has only played all 16 games in a season twice. To quote Rice himself, on Seattle’s official website, “I was just thinking about things I’ve been through in the last few years. I’ve hit the ground a number of times. I have quite a few injuries. It’s something I’ve always battled through and came back from. But I just figure at this point I have the rest of my life ahead of me and I want to be able to function and do things later down the road.”

Rice stepped his game “up” by taking the mature step to retire. It takes a lot of wisdom for someone that young and skilled to do such a thing for the betterment of his future. We wish Rice all the best going forward, and congrats on your style points.

  • Machine Gun Kelly
    Machine Gun Kelly

If you are in any way familiar with MGK then you would expect his acquisition of style points this week to be the result of another crazy concert or self-induced flash mob inside a mall. However, it’s actually neither. MGK claims his spot with these other superstars by way of posting a “classy” picture. Of course he’s still wearing his long-sleeve shirt, I mean tank top, sorry. (His plethora of tattoos confuses me sometimes.) The chain-link necklace just exudes his style and nothing looks harder than that sly smirk.

MGK took his ‘gram game and style to a new level with this picture, showcasing a sophisticated look with the clean haircut and stylish hat while still showing off his tattoos. Nice job earning the style points, MGK, and I look forward to the “very important picture” you mention in the caption.

  • Waka Flocka Flame

With Rory winning the British Open, Waka Flocka Flame also felt the need to make his own mark on the golf world. It’s amazing how his putting stroke even managed to get the ball rolling on target, and to top it all off, the ball went in. Well, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Aside from his putting stroke, Waka Flocka Flame escalated his style as well. The FC Barcelona jersey and Timbs go surprisingly well together, not to mention the matching belt. However, although all of this alone is worthy of style points, the real kicker in itself is the “Watch out Rory!” he yells after draining the putt.

  • Derrick Rose

    He’s back.

Chicago’s finest had himself a great week. Besides being one of the best players at Team USA training camp in Las Vegas, Rose also officially unveiled his new sneaker, the adidas D Rose 5 Boost. With a few especially slick colorways — that black/grey edition is a must-have for anyone with any kind of style — it’s sure to be one of this season’s best-selling kicks.

But what I’ll remember most is Rose’s hops. I knew he’d look good in controlled scrimmages with the national team and I knew his kicks would impress as always, but the hops were something I was nervous he’d lost. Thankfully, it looks like he’s the same old Derrick.

This is one of the best times of the year. Baseball is rumbling towards the end of the regular season and the start of the playoff races, and football is finally back. With training camps thoroughly underway, it feels like every day is a holiday. New stars like Sammy Watkins and Teddy Bridgewater are making headlines in camp, and veterans like Michael Vick are showing out in new homes. It’s the perfect opportunity for players to show off what they got.

On our end, each week in Style Points we’ll count down recent people who took their game and their swagger to another level. Whether it was defying the odds and retiring on their own terms, coming back with a flourish or continuing to set style trends, these six went above and beyond.
