Can you remember the first sneaker you got that changed your approach to shoes? Where you went from wearing shoes casually to being a person who actually loves and collects them?

@sneaker_galactus: The first pair would have to be the original Air Jordan III White/Cement colorway. My parents did not get them for me when they first dropped. Instead I watched my cousin rock them for a while until I could convince my mom to buy. By then they were really hard to find in a kid’s size but mom came through! After that I had to have every pair of Jordans that I could get.

How many pairs do you have? Do you have a favorite right now? If someone asked you to showcase one shoe from your collection, what would it be?

@sneaker_galactus: I honestly stopped counting at 1,000 pairs because I’m always adding new pairs every week. Right now my favorite pair would be the Away Kevin Martin Air Jordan XX3 from his Sacramento Kings days. The black and purple colorway is just ridiculous!

@sneaker_galactus: I have sneakers in a storage unit as well as my apartment.  I also keep pairs at my girlfriend’s house.

What’s a sneaker and/or line in your collection that you feel gets overlooked/underappreciated by the masses?

@sneaker_galactus: The Huarache 2K5 is one of my favorite basketball models. I think that if you didn’t play basketball you might have slept on them. I have GR, limited, and Player Exclusives…around 20 pairs of them. Awesome basketball shoe that I love to rock in warm weather.

Have you had any crazy release day stories?

@sneaker_galactus: I try to stay away from crazy releases nowadays but yeah I got one. The Stash blue pack (AM95 and AF1) was dropping in March of ’06. Originally a customer could buy one of each. Because of how many people started camping out and fighting, you were only able to buy one or the other. I wanted both so I decided to fly to L.A. so I could get the other pair. Thinking back that was kind of nuts.

How have things like Instagram changed the sneaker industry over the past few years?

@sneaker_galactus: Big time. Folks are doing so much for popularity to become an “influencer.” Social media allows you to project how you want to be perceived by others. You are your own PR. I’m still old school but it has its merit. It has become a huge thing.

What cool things has your love of sneakers enabled you to do?

@sneaker_galactus: I have met some of the best people and formed some really great bonds/friendships because of my love for sneakers. I have been featured in the BATA Shoe Museum and I’m even doing my own exhibit for NBA All-Star Weekend in Brooklyn on Feb 15. I’m also looking forward to having a couple pairs featured this summer at the Brooklyn Museum in an exhibit curated by the American Federation of Arts!

What’s the hardest part of this hobby/maintaining your collection?

@sneaker_galactus: The need for space to store sneakers will always be an issue. Oxidation is the worst thing for me. I hate when my kicks start yellowing!

What were the highlights of 2014 for you in terms of the sneaker industry and in your own collection?

@sneaker_galactus: 2014 was great because I feel like some folks started to recognize who I am as a collector. I always felt that I was an unknown that collects in the shadows.

If you could map out the perfect sneaker year in 2015, what would that include for you?

@sneaker_galactus: Air Mags with power lacing and being able to get my hands on Nike Basketball, Jordan, adidas, and Under Armour player exclusives for reasonable prices. Highly doubtful, but I can hope!

Everyone wants to be a sneakerhead, but not everyone knows what it takes.

Just ask longtime collector Chad Jones, better known to the Internet by his Instagram account, @sneaker_galactus. Jones says 2014 was really the first year where people started noticing him, where he went from underground sensation to mainstream sneaker celebrity. That makes sense. With nearly 5,000 followers on the ‘gram, and with dozens and dozens of incredible player exclusives, stuff you’ll never see anywhere else, Jones is the epitome of what you want to be.

Ever since he started this journey with the original White/Cement colorway of the Air Jordan III, Jones has been adding more and more to his collection. At this point, don’t even ask him to tell you how many he has. He doesn’t know anymore.

“I honestly stopped counting at 1,000 pairs,” Jones wrote via email, “because I’m always adding new pairs every week. Right now my favorite pair would be the Away Kevin Martin Air Jordan XX3 from his Sacramento Kings days. The black and purple colorway is just ridiculous!”

Jones is the latest Instagram celebrity to be featured in our ongoing series, The Stash. From @jumpmanbostic to @glackster to @lovetasha, the sneaker world is a diverse place. And it’s only going to grow in 2015.

We caught up with Jones recently to talk about his collection, what stands out about it and what he can’t wait for now that 2015 is underway. The following is in his own words, with a look at some of the greatest and rarest sneakers in his collection. You can try all you want to get on this level but chances are you’ll never get there. This is next-level stuff.
