Champs Sports Presents :24 – The Sneakers That Will Define This NBA Season

  • Nike LeBron 13 Written in the Stars

It’s hard to avoid MJ comparisons when talking about King James. While the Air Jordan line was infamous for its risk-taking style–from the unconventional materials to the addition of features like straps–the LeBron line has steadily settled into a groove. That doesn’t make the shoe any less dope.

They may not be for everyone, as the shoe suits a bruising force like James more than a lightweight slasher, but it’s tough to deny their style. His detour in South Beach blessed Nike with added inspiration for colorways, which provides us with more options than most of us know what to do with.

We won’t go as far as to predict that ballers will rock Kanye’s sneaker on the hardwood this season–though it’s not impossible–but this is a shoe that figures to be a prominent player in NBA wardrobes this season. Stars love to be associated with titans from other realms, and aligning themselves with Yeezus via sneaker choice is a no-brainer. With more colorways seemingly on the way, in both the 750 and 350, including a black version that should play nice with off-court attire, it’ll be tough to escape these.

    Under Armour Curry Two

The sneaker market is often resistant to change, which makes Steph Curry’s boost to the Under Armour brand all the more impressive. We told you about how Curry helped boost UA sales by 40 percent, and with his signature shoe gaining traction, that number figures to rise.

Under Armour might not be a “traditional” name in the hoop sneaker arena, but with the help of their star, they can continue to gain traction against the old powers. The release of Curry’s second signature should do wonders.

    Whatever James Harden is wearing

Even before we see what it’s going to look like, it’s safe to say this might be the most anticipated signature sneaker to drop in a few years. Mirroring his ascent from OKC’s bench to Houston stardom, James Harden goes from Nike backup to adidas poster child.

Harden has long been regarded as something of a fashion icon, so his first offering as adidas’ lead man figures to make some waves when it eventually drops in (reportedly) 2016. Will it take the safe route on the first runaround, or should we expect some risk-taking from the new partnership? This one is worth staying tuned for.

Until then, you can bet that Harden will be showing off other kicks in the adidas catalog, most notably the Crazylight Boost. He’s already been spotted in the ultra-clean white pair you see above, and he’ll be highlighting the Boost tech for the 3-Stripes early and often.

  • Nike Air Mag

You can bet that the NBA’s best and brightest will be spotted in these quite often this year. What’s not to love? Whether you want to feel like Marty McFly in the Back To The Future series, or simply love the futuristic look of the Air Mag, these are going to be a hot commodity all year long.

Design guru Tinker Hatfield promised they’d be releasing–with power-lacing!–in 2015, and his word is as good as it gets in the sneaker world. More pairs are rumored for 2016, too. Perhaps power-lacing becomes a more common sneaker inclusion.

    Air Jordan Retros

No NBA season can pass without significant buzz surrounding the latest retro Jordan Brand release. This year has already brought (and will continue to bring) some absolute heat, and you can be sure you’ll catch a few of these on the feet of NBA players throughout the season. With names like the Jordan VIII “Aqua” releasing about a month into the season, we’re getting started on the right foot.

    Nike KD 8

How did Kevin Durant start flying under the radar? Sitting out most of a season due to injury woes can do that to the league’s brightest. Fortunately, KD is about to make his triumphant return to regular action, and this low-cut edition of his signature line figures to be a staple in on-court repertoires and off-the-court lounging.

Nike has concocted some great colorways for the Durant line in the past–see the bright crimson “DMV” for starters–so we’re prepared for more heat.

  • Jordan Brand
    Air Jordan 30

He may not be wearing these on-court anymore, but the 30th anniversary edition of MJ’s famous Air Jordan line is sure to cause a ruckus when the public can get their hands on pairs. The sneaker has been shrouded in secrecy and speculation, which has given their eventual release a certain mystique. Jordan Brand figures to make yet another splash the minute these are available.

When you discuss NBA history with fellow basketball fans, most of them can pinpoint years based on the standout performances of the stars. Whether it’s Stephen Curry bombarding the league with threes on the way to an MVP award or Kobe Bryant unleashing streams of 50-point games in the mid-2000s, each year takes on its own distinct feeling. The same goes for title teams; fans of iconic champions like the 72-10 “Unstoppabulls” and the Fo-Fo-Fo ’83 Sixers will debate forever about who the best team ever is.

Of course, years and eras can be defined by the footwear as well. A pair of Chuck Taylors will bring fans back to the days of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, while the sight of a Converse Weapon recalls the peak of Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson. Some of Michael Jordan’s most iconic sneakers even have colorways that are nicknamed after moments in his career, like the “Six Rings” or “Three-Peat.”

It’d be asking a lot for modern sneaker releases to live up to the luster of those aforementioned names – after all, the market is a lot more crowded – but what it lacks in singular power it makes up for in variety. The league has never had as many stars with compelling footwear to choose from, which provides a litany of options for sneakerheads around the world.

Whose footwear will come to signify the 2015-16 NBA campaign? These are the Sneakers That Will Define This NBA Season.
