Sneaker Theater: Creed

    Nike Tech Fleece

Nike Tech Fleece is seen throughout the whole movie. I caught myself a few times during the film thinking about how I need more Tech Fleece in my life. It was great execution by Nike, and it had people talking about the style and outfits after the film was released. As one of the most comfortable outfits at the moment, the Swoosh made sure to keep fans of the product coming after showcasing it in some of the movie’s best training scenes.

    Air Jordan XX8

This sneaker choice made my eyes pop out because I wasn’t used to seeing them in a boxing ring. Plus, with the Air Jordan XX9 already out at the time, I thought that would have been a more likely option the brand could go with. Professional boxer Andre Ward portrays Danny “Stuntman” Wheeler, who gives Adonis his first true awakening after knocking him out in a sparring session while donning the XX8s. Wheeler would have fought “Pretty” Ricky Conlan in the championship bout in the film but broke his jaw during the press conference for the fight–the scene opens up the opportunity for Adonis to fight for it all. Ward is a Jordan Brand athlete so the tie-in was obvious.

    Air Jordan XI "Bred"

Adonis wears the Air Jordan XI “Bred” in one of my favorite scenes in the movie. He tells his stepmother that he quit his stable high-paying job to pursue a professional career in boxing full-time. As Apollo Creed’s widow, she has witnessed the worst of what could happen in the ring and doesn’t want the same for Donnie. This is also a scene where I knew we were in for a treat in this movie when it came to Jordan Brand attire.

Creed is not the only movie to endorse product placement. Sporting apparel, fast food, beverage, and even car brands have all planted their products in films to escape the traditional media route for promo. The same thing can be said while looking back to 1976 when the original Rocky film was released. In perhaps one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history, Rocky Balboa climbed the steps to the Philadelphia Museum of Art after a triumphant training scene and raised his hands while overlooking the city. He was rocking a pair of Chucks in the scene, which was great exposure. Fast-forward to Creed and the older Balboa is still rocking Chucks throughout the film, keeping his tradition alive.

    Air Jordan VI "White/Infrared"

Donnie’s rotation throughout the movie was on point. And in some of his interactions with love interest Bianca (played by Tessa Thompson), the young savage brought out this pair of Air Jordan VIs. Technically, they were never shown in the final cut but hey, that’s what promo shots are for.

During one of the film’s most iconic scenes, Donnie takes a run through the streets of Philadelphia while accompanied by one of the city’s notorious ATV gangs. During the montage, he is rocking some Nike Tech Fleece, some Nike trainers, and this pullover hoodie.

When you step into the ring with the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world, you have to come with the heat. Donnie did that here, rocking the HyperKO MP, a shoe originally designed for Manny Pacquiao.

    Air Jordan VI "Infrared"

Another classic Air Jordan retro that found its way onto the big screen was the AJ VI “Infrared.” Almost metaphorically, Adonis wears the the Infrareds during the ending of Creed on the famous Rocky steps. It signifies that this is the beginning of Adonis as a prized fighter–in the same way the Air Jordan VI was the sneaker that Michael Jordan won his first NBA championship in. Whether that is a stretch or not, you cannot deny the resemblance.

Also in the movie’s final scene, with Rocky and Creed climbing the iconic steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Donnie wasn’t just rocking the Jordan VI. He completed the fit with this Kobe Destroyer jacket from Nike.

When I first heard about the Rocky franchise getting a spin-off, I was a bit skeptical. Rocky Balboa is, without a doubt, one of the greatest sports movie characters of all time and trying to live up to that legacy is a tough challenge. But after watching Creed, I was amazed at the awesome work of director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan. While the Rocky influence is obviously there, the two did enough to put their own spin on the classic, perhaps starting their own legacy in the process.

Jordan plays Adonis “Donnie” Johnson, the son of fallen boxing hero Apollo Creed. Adonis is a hungry young fighter looking for guidance and a shot at boxing glory. He ultimately connects with an older Rocky (Sylvester Stallone), who at first is reluctant to get back into the boxing ring. While Rocky eventually gives in, the road to success is not easy as both fighter and mentor face obstacles throughout the story.

The movie is full of amazing boxing cinematography, intense workouts, and, honestly, a lot of today’s hottest gear. Throughout the movie, Jordan rocks a variety of Nike Tech Fleece outfits and retro Air Jordans, due in part to the partnership between Warner Bros. and Jordan Brand. Sole Collector actually counted over 160 Nike Swooshes and Jumpman logos appearing on-screen. It was product placement at its finest.

As Creed releases on Blu-ray today, we’re showing respect to one of the best movies from this past year by listing the most notable sneaker and gear moments in the film. This is Sneaker Theater.
