When I first heard about the Rocky franchise getting a spin-off, I was a bit skeptical. Rocky Balboa is, without a doubt, one of the greatest sports movie characters of all time and trying to live up to that legacy is a tough challenge. But after watching Creed, I was amazed at the awesome work of director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan. While the Rocky influence is obviously there, the two did enough to put their own spin on the classic, perhaps starting their own legacy in the process.
Jordan plays Adonis “Donnie” Johnson, the son of fallen boxing hero Apollo Creed. Adonis is a hungry young fighter looking for guidance and a shot at boxing glory. He ultimately connects with an older Rocky (Sylvester Stallone), who at first is reluctant to get back into the boxing ring. While Rocky eventually gives in, the road to success is not easy as both fighter and mentor face obstacles throughout the story.

The movie is full of amazing boxing cinematography, intense workouts, and, honestly, a lot of today’s hottest gear. Throughout the movie, Jordan rocks a variety of Nike Tech Fleece outfits and retro Air Jordans, due in part to the partnership between Warner Bros. and Jordan Brand. Sole Collector actually counted over 160 Nike Swooshes and Jumpman logos appearing on-screen. It was product placement at its finest.
As Creed releases on Blu-ray today, we’re showing respect to one of the best movies from this past year by listing the most notable sneaker and gear moments in the film. This is Sneaker Theater.
