6 Reasons Why Everyone Needs to Own the Air Jordan 4

  • MJ made one of his greatest shots ever in this shoe

If you don’t know this is the shoe that Jordan wore when he made this shot — the shot that probably helped start his legacy as a crunch-time killer — then you need to do some reading. This might be Jordan’s second-most iconic shot ever as it advanced Chicago to the second round in the 1989 Playoffs. It also saved Jordan, who had blown Game 4 and could’ve been hit with the dreaded “goat” label all summer.

This is what legends do though: They come back and set the record straight.

  • Air Jordan 3
It's a descendant of the Air Jordan III

The Air Jordan III was a masterpiece right from the start. With elephant print that helped set it apart from everything else on the market, it potentially saved the entire line as Mike was thinking about leaving Nike for adidas or Converse. Tinker Hatfield did the smart thing with the IV, however. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel for a second straight year, he simply took the incredible aesthetics of the III and improved on the performance aspects. The winged ankle straps are probably the most visually compelling of those.

It looks good at any time of the year

You can rock the IV with pants or with shorts and either way it’ll have you looking fresh. That silhouette is just perfect, and the webbing and heel tab help set this one apart. There are just so many different things you can do with this shoe. The ankle wings can be laced up or not. You can tuck pants into that tongue. You can do intricate lace jobs through the locks. It doesn’t matter what you do it always looks good.

  • MJ had his best playoff game ever against the Bad Boys in the IV

Jordan had some monster games against Detroit during the regular season but in the playoffs, the old vets usually had a few extra tricks up their sleeves. However, in Game 3 of their matchup in the 1989 Eastern Conference Finals, Jordan put on a dominant show.

Rocking the bred IVs, MJ took over in the closing minutes. With Chicago trailing by as many as eight with just four minutes to play, Jordan dropped 11 of his 46 points in crunch time, many of them on defensive beast Dennis Rodman. Detroit had lead by 14 at one point and it just didn’t matter. MJ ended up doing all of this on just 26 shots. Add in five steals and the game-winning runner from an impossible angle and this was a masterpiece.

It's perhaps MJ's most underrated sneaker

I’m not sure what it is but the IV continuously gets passed over when people start talking about their favorite Jordan of all time. I’m not completely sold on the reasons but I can think of a few of them: Jordan never won a title in these; they immediately followed an instant classic; the IV doesn’t have any absolute classic colorways that are loved like the XI, III, V, and I are; and the shoe doesn’t often get worn in-game by NBA players during the modern era.

All of that being said, this shoe features some incredible colorways — both OG and new ones that JB baked up. It also sports some unique features that you won’t find anywhere else in the line. Overall, the sneaker was just a perfect silhouette and helped Jordan take another step closer to a championship. That alone makes it a classic.

Michael Jordan did more than enough in the Air Jordan IV to give it the classic label. He had his best all-around season in 1988-89, scoring 32 points per game along with 8.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists. He led Chicago to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in his career. In the playoffs, he had one of his best runs ever, scoring at least 40 points in an unbelievable seven of 17 games. He almost single-handedly pushed the 6-seeded Bulls past a 57-win Cleveland team in round one, beating them in their place in the decisive Game 5 — courtesy of “The Shot” — and then helped Chicago knock out division winner New York in the semis. He even put Chicago up 2-1 against Detroit in the Eastern Conference Finals…before they eventually faltered. But despite all of that, the IV rose to classic status simply because it was an incredible sneaker.

Now with the remastered “Columbia” colorway of the Air Jordan IV returning to Champs Sports this weekend, everyone and their momma knows now is the time to cop. The sneaker has never been better quality. We also haven’t seen this colorway in a long, long time. The original Air Jordan IV came out in four colorways but during the first round of retros in 1999, 10 years later, a Midnight Navy edition dropped that hasn’t seen the light since.

There are a number of reasons why you can’t be skipping this release, ESPECIALLY if you don’t already own a pair of the Jordan IV. We’re not going to list them all here. Just the most important ones. Here are 6 Reasons Why Everyone Needs to Own the Air Jordan 4.
