Brand events are never normal, least not the ones done right. But neither is vibing with your homies to a DJ spinning the hottest records, eating Cuban wraps off small plates, Shotcut barbers just across the set for clean-ups, haircuts, and beard trims, and PUMA lacing the place with everything from Va$htie collections to fire fits and special edition collaborations.
Last week at the Openhouse Gallery in downtown Manhattan, I got a preview of the brand’s fall 2015 collection. The heat came through in more than just the food. With names like Va$htie and Rihanna, as well as athletes like Usain Bolt holding down for the squad, this past summer’s collection–like the amazing 4th of July pack that was available at Champs Sports–were only warm-ups. At the event for the fall collection, there was the classic PUMA Suede Blur edition, topped only by the “all-over” colorway drops of the stylish PUMA R698, ranging from brown to green to red to black to blue. Another highlight was the all-gold R698 produced by Va$htie.
You see, this Back to School season, there are so many options for cats to put some style into their latest fit that sometimes it can be a little overwhelming, and everywhere I go I see that stylized in the choices we make. Even in 2015, there are still too many of us following a leader rather than crafting our own lane and developing our own look. Respect is never given. It’s earned. And no one is earning a thing without some understanding of the culture’s history.
PUMA has a long history of big moments in sports and culture. Cats nowadays might insist on having a pair of the PUMA Blaze of Glory in their rotation, considering its place among the culture’s secret footwear weapons, but they should also realize how influential the Suede and Roma were in crafting the look and feel of many of today’s most popular silhouettes as their importance began, rather than ended, with Clyde Frazier and Pele.
Now that this year’s Back to School season is embracing the lifestyle look, this is a good brand to post up with on the first day back in classes. As I found out during the event launch for PUMA’s Fall 2015 Collection, they’re bringing more than enough heat to make even the tamest sneakerhead standout. See how it all went down below.
