    Early riser

If you’re not out there before the sun rises, you can expect a LOT of traffic, and then by the time you get to your destination, the stuff you want might already be sold out. In fact, Black Friday has morphed back into Thanksgiving Thursday as time has gone on, so you might want to be on top of your game early and head out or get online even before the clock strikes midnight. (If you haven’t done that by now, well, we can’t help you in that regard.)

    Have goals

This year, the “Infrared” Air Jordan VI is dropping on Black Friday and if that’s the sneaker you really want — and it should be…it’s one of Michael Jordan‘s most classic silhouettes — then you better get it through your head early that you have to fight for it. Most sneakerheads are going to be going for that one too. It’s the sneaker the GOAT won his first title in. It’s a “bred” colorway. It hasn’t come out in the OG materials in a long, long time.

On Black Friday, make sure you know what you want ahead of time. It’s easy to just walk around the mall aimlessly. That’s how you miss out. Put together a pregame huddle with your significant other. Outfit a plan. Lay the groundwork. Then go to work. Of course…

    Have a backup plan

…sometimes having a plan still doesn’t help you out. Remember when the “Black Cement” Air Jordan III dropped around Thanksgiving three years ago? Yeah…pure chaos. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how on top of your game you are. Sometimes you just get unlucky.

This year’s going to be a good one, though. Sneakerheads don’t have to just rely on getting the Jordan VI to call it a good day. There’s also the Nike Air Max 2015, the “Empire State” colorway of the Nike KD7, and even new colorways of the Nike Huarache dropping. If you don’t get the exact sneaker you want, don’t fret. There are a lot of amazing options.

Cop what you normally miss out on

It’s not all about the sneakers on this day, either. For some reason, the holidays come around and you just feel compelled to spend more money. So follow your instinct and start copping snapbacks and hoodies and jerseys and everything you missed out on in 2014.

Jerseys, in particular, always seem like they fly off the shelves quicker around this time. While Black Friday plays a part, I think the timing is also perfect. The NFL is running toward the playoffs and NBA basketball is heating up. The fans want to follow.

Make Black Friday the day you grab everything you missed out on all year and you’ll go home to eat leftover turkey feeling pretty satisfied with yourself.

    Do your research

Outside of setting that alarm clock or waking up early, this might be the most important advice I can give. It also encompasses just about everything else I’ve mentioned in the first four slides. Make sure you DO YOUR RESEARCH. Know ahead of time what’s dropping and what isn’t. Know what you can expect to get your hands on. It’s all about efficiency today and make sure you’re picking your spots accordingly.

In the end, you’ll have to leave time for things like trying to find a parking spot or dealing with traffic, or even a slow line at the cash register. We can’t predict that stuff so make sure you’re completely on top of everything else.

The biggest, most important shopping day of the year is here. Black Friday. From 48-year-old mothers of three to 13-year-old middle schoolers are out on these streets and it’s real. It’s so real. As time has gone on, especially over the last few years, it seems like the lines and releases and sales are just getting crazier and crazier. Honestly, it can be scary at times, a little overwhelming.

Especially for sneakerheads.

For the past five to six years, brands like Nike and the Jordan Brand have redefined the holiday season for people like us. The campouts and lines and crazy online releases will always be there for classic silhouettes, no matter what time of the year, but when that release date falls during the holiday season it only serves to amp up the anticipation. Sneaker lovers are obsessed with the holidays and this is maybe the biggest reason why.

Today, don’t venture outside without reading this guide first. Every minute counts — actually, probably every second counts. If you’re not up on your game you’ll probably miss out on options A, B, and C. Just remember that everyone just like you, all of the cats on the team, all of the dudes in class, they’re all going to be looking to cop the same sneakers and jerseys and hoodies that you are, so you always have to be one step ahead. As Omar Little once said, “It’s all in the game.”
