An important part of any signature sneaker line is the storytelling, and though his sneaker is currently overshadowed by his older Nike brethren–Kobe, LeBron, KD–Kyrie Irving is doing a good job of developing a lane for his shoe. While Durant has his weatherman dreams and LeBron has his lion alter ego, Irving often pays tribute to his unique upbringing in his kicks: his time in Australia, his status as a late bloomer, his explosive debut at Duke.
One of the returning concepts this year takes its inspiration from the point guard’s time at Duke. Though it came and went quickly, Irving developed an understanding of hard work and dedication there, of how to be a professional. He left a completely different player and went on to win the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award rather easily. Duke deserves some credit for preparing him that way…and he did it while finding some very special friends in Durham, forming a bond with his teammates that’ll never be broken.
Now, nearly a year to the day since the “Brotherhood” Nike Kyrie 1 debuted, we’re getting a sequel.

Available this Saturday at Champs Sports will be the “Alma Mater” edition of the Kyrie 2. It’s a shoe that features an entirely mesh upper in Hyper Cobalt, along with a black strap and hits of white and black along the midsole.
The “Alma Mater” storyline is indeed coming back again for the Nike Kyrie 2. Irving only played 11 games at Duke, but his impact there still resonates. He is a Blue Devil at heart.
