Nike‘s Air Huarache has been all the rage lately, debuting and dropping in so many different colorways it was almost impossible to keep up. The timing makes sense, considering what’s currently trending in streetwear fashion. While the sneaker first debuted 25 years ago as a performance shoe for runners, over time it’s developed into an athleisure piece, something that goes much better with jogger sweats at the mall than it does in Dri-FIT at the gym.
So as the Swoosh continues to battle with adidas and other brands for control of this particular market, you had to figure they’d drop something for the turn of the calendar year to hit a classic line with a little extra boost. Turns out we were right.
Available today at Champs Sports in five different colorways–Hyper Turquoise, Black, and Bright Mango shown here, as well as a Dark Grey and a Photo Blue–the new Air Huarache Ultra looks pretty similar to the original but does sport an updated mesh upper with Dynamic Flywire and a sole unit that sits lower to the ground. It’s also aimed at the ladies, meaning you’ll likely see a bunch of dudes clamoring to get their hands on a pair large enough to finesse.
The Huarache technology can trace its roots back to a waterskiing vacation, where legendary designer Tinker Hatfield had an epiphany. His ensuing designs become some of the first sneakers to ever use the same neoprene material found in surf booties.
Because the original concept was so ridiculously clean and unique, it’ll always remain classic. But between sneakerboots and varying materials, the shoe is showing it can sport a number of different looks.
In this case, the new Nike Air Huarache Ultra took the DNA of a legend and produced something for the ladies this holiday season in a few slick colorways. Cop for yourself or cop for your girl.
