Mid-September consistently toes the line between summer and fall streetwear. Every morning has us up checking the weather. Will it rain? Is it going to be cold? An unexpected heat wave? With the weather not able to make up its mind, our sneaker choices have to also be versatile because you never really know what you’re going to get.
Thankfully, the Air Jordan 14 is one of the more versatile sneakers you will ever see, and the Black Toe colorway, dropping this Saturday at Champs Sports, is potentially the best of them. Wearing shorts? The low-cut, sleek upper of these gems will do just fine. Rocking jeans? The 14 can roll just as easily. With a smooth, white-based upper — minus the ribs on the ’06 retro that had OG collectors pissed off — these shoes, in particular, almost always get worn to the ground. Originally dropping in 1998 and 1999, after Michael Jordan wore them in most of the ’98 NBA Finals against Utah, the 14 was heavily inspired by Jordan’s love of the Ferrari. (Hence why we got the “Ferrari” colorway that dropped at Champs Sports earlier this month.) There’s the Jordan logo, eerily reminiscent of the Ferrari shield logo, as well as the teeth and “grille” along the midsole.
This will mark the second time this sneaker has been retroed. If you missed out on the first in 2006, don’t be a fool in 2014. This is as close to OG as you’re going to get. Even if you did cop back in the day, who says you can’t double-up? Ask @jonallon80 about that.
