Kyrie Irving’s 10 Best Sneaker Colorways

  • Nike Hyperdunk 2013 best Kyrie Irving sneakers

    10. Hyperdunk 2013

Even before Nike made Irving the face of the HyperRev, it was obvious that the Swoosh was grooming the young point guard for something special. One of the best colorways to release for the Hyperdunk 2013 was one that dipped into Kyrie’s Australian roots. Peter Fogg created a teal and volt shoe that was meant to be a modern take on Australia’s national basketball team, and the theme continued throughout the shoe. Detailing on the tongue and lining told Irving’s story from childhood to the NBA. And Irving’s unique off-court style is accentuated within the design, especially his love of cultured, rustic materials that can speak to both history and modern fashion.

Every signature athlete is going to have a certain theme that is constant throughout their line. We have seen it a lot with Kevin Durant’s line. Not only does Irving pay homage to his alma mater, he also shows some love for his high school, St. Patrick, with this dope colorway.

  • Nike Zoom HyperRev best Kyrie Irving sneakers

    7. Zoom HyperRev

First unveiled during December of 2013, the HyperRev was not only a new model from Nike, but it also acted as Kyrie’s audition for a signature sneaker. Designer Leo Chang created the shoe with Irving’s speed and quickness in mind, adding full-length Nike Zoom, a lightweight Phylite midsole, and Flywire and mesh on the upper.

Irving put in work with the HyperRev, averaging nearly 21 points and just over six assists per game for the season. Amazingly, it was only the beginning of his third season in the NBA when Nike made him the face of the HyperRev. It was a sign of things to come, especially this launch colorway, which was replicated again on Kyrie’s first two sigs.

  • Nike Kyrie 2 Alma Mater best Kyrie Irving sneakers

    6. Kyrie 2 “Alma Mater”

While Kyrie only played 11 games at Duke under Coach K, he made a considerable impact on the squad, especially moving forward in recruiting. The Blue Devils were never considered much of a one-and-done factory, and they weren’t accustomed to bringing in guards that were as elusive as Irving. With that came a recruiting boom that helped land guys like Austin Rivers, Jabari Parker, and now high school stars like Jayson Tatum and Harry Giles. Playing at Duke is a brotherhood and as one of the most prestigious programs in history, Irving pays ultimate respect. This sneaker features an entire mesh upper in Hyper Cobalt, along with a black strap and white and black accents along the midsole. Expect the Duke brotherhood theme on all of his future signature releases.

The Kyrie 1 ”Driveway” pays homage to those nights where his dad would park his car at the edge of the driveway and hit the lights, to give his son another hour to work on his game. The sneaker features an all-black upper, with a reflective silver Swoosh and green glow accents.

The Kyrie 1 “Zoom City All-Star” was inspired by the “ghostlike” feel of the old City Hall subway station, which was one of the world’s first subway systems and known for its speed. The sneakers features a dark grey palette that symbolizes the structure of the station. An icy translucent outsole extends to the front of the silhouette and makes the sneaker pop.

When the Swoosh named Kyrie Irving one of its signature athletes, the thought process behind the decision was all about the future. At the Kyrie 1 unveiling, Irving was welcomed by past Nike signature legends Charles Barkley and Penny Hardaway, while current guys like Kobe, LeBron, and KD all shared words about what it means to be a Nike athlete.

In a video at the unveiling, LeBron spoke about Irving carrying on the legacy, saying, “It’s a brotherhood here, it’s a family here at Nike, now it is time for us to lay down the path for the next guy and make the legacy continue to grow.”

Nike athletes are built on flash and are some of the most charismatic personalities to touch the court. Irving is one of the most marketable players in the game and has done right so far in fitting in with the Swoosh fraternity. His accolades fit the criteria–3-time NBA All-Star, 2014 ASG MVP, 2012 Rookie of the Year, FIBA World Cup MVP, one of the premier ball-handlers in the league–and he’s a perfect candidate to carry the brand’s legacy into the future.

Irving’s signature sneaker line is one of the most underrated in the game. The Kyrie 1 was a success because of it’s creativity, performance, and price point. The Kyrie 2 is following the same path with a few distinctive colorways that have already released.

[Eds. note: We all know the “Uncle Drew” Kyrie 1 would’ve taken the top spot on this list.] Just pure, readily available heat.
