Kevin Durant and Hip-Hop: A Definitive History

  • Wale
    7/11/2007

The Oklahoma City star has been in plenty of rap songs over the years. It all started with his DMV homie Wale, who put him in his 2007 song “Please Listen” off the mixtape 100 Miles & Running. In the song he says “Kevin Durant you’re an ant like my mother kin,” showing love to his friend from his home area of Washington, D.C.

The next song we hear Kevin Durant’s name in is Fabolous’ “Steve Jobs.” Fab cleverly compares Durant’s jersey number and quick jump shot to the streets, rapping about how fast KD can shoot and score.

And so it begins — one of the greatest professional athletes vs. rapper beefs of all time. Early in 2011, Kevin Durant voiced his opinion on the rapper Lil B aka Based God, not realizing the impact it would have.

#TheBasedGodsCurse is born. Lil B casts an evil spell over Kevin Durant worse than the curse of the Great Bambino. Lil B lets his fans and the world know that KD will never win the title for calling him a whack rapper. Durant has won a handful of scoring titles, but this hilarious curse of not winning the NBA championship lives on another season.

This was the first of two French Montana songs to shoutout the OKC forward. French released “Head Quarters at the top of 2012. In the song he drops a sick line about his boy, Kevin Durant.

Kevin Durant officially releases his first “mainstream” rap song under the rap name Kevin Durant. Pretty clever, huh? How does Lil B feel about this one? I’m sure he was ready to hop on the remix as soon as he heard it. The title of the song is “Worried About Tomorrow,” which is pretty ironic because Durant probably had a game the next day.

The summer smash of 2012 was released by none other than the man French Montana. The track “Pop That featured other global rappers Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne. In the third verse of the song Drake says, “Gettin’ cheddar packs like KD, OKC that’s player s***.” Boom! KD and OKC being rapped about at every club, bar, and stadium in America for the entire summer.

By this point, KD was considering dropping a rap album.

“I enjoy doing a lot of different things. I’m a basketball player. That’s what I do and what I love but that’s just not all who I am. I’m talented in a lot of different areas. Rapping is one of those things I just enjoy doing.”

Can’t hate on the kid for trying it, but don’t you have a season to focus on, KD? We still haven’t seen a full project from Durant, but never say never. Hov, why don’t you throw your boy a nice 16?

If there is anything you takeaway from this article it should be that Kevin Durant truly is a hip-hop head. Dude knows the rap game extremely well. If you put him to the ultimate rap test, he will pass with flying colors as he did here in an interview for the cover with the Champs Sports SWAG digital magazine.

Nothing like two basketball players joining forces to come up with one the best songs ever made. (I got jokes.) This track is actually pretty good, but it’s debatable which player has the better flow — KD or Stephen Jackson.

Maybe KD got some good reviews from his song with Stak5 aka Stephen Jackson because he released another song called “Tha Formula less than a month later.

La familia. Jay Z has really made a name for himself in the sports business world by signing clients such as Victor Cruz, CC Sabathia, Robinson Cano and most importantly our boy, Kevin Durant. I wonder what Jay would say about KD pursuing a rap career after basketball is done. Hey, Jay is still doing it at the tender age of 44.

Exactly a week after signing Durant to Roc Nation Sports, Jay Z released his 12th studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail. One of the standout songs on the album (“Crown”) included a lyric in which he reiterated the news to the world by stating, “It’s a new world, hit up KD.”

In a rare social media moment, KD and Drake went go back and forth debating who won the SMACK/URL Rap battle. It seemed like Drake Hollow Da Don won this battle, but don’t tell Durant that. This alone proves that Durant is truly knowledgeable of all types of rap as most people don’t even know these freestyle battles exist.

I could probably write an entire article on the timeline of Lil B and Kevin Durant’s beef but that is already all over the Internet. After trolling Durant for two years on Twitter and challenging him to a one-on-one pickup game, Lil B dropped a bomb by releasing a diss track right in time for the playoffs. The curse is still in full effect and the music video is about to hit one million views. Please drop the curse, Lil B, I want to see Durant win a ring.

Any rap fan knows the mystique behind Jay Electronica. He is a great lyricist, awesome performer… but it feels like, for some reason, he is never going to release an album. For a hip-hop head like myself, it is cool to see Durant show appreciation for a guy like Jay Electronica. Check out the short 16-second clip in which Durant compliments Jay by calling him the best rapper out.

One of the biggest stories of the summer came after California rapper Game sank a basketball shot in which he thought won him $20,000 from KD. Voicing his frustration on Instagram, Game called out Durant. A few days later after the two hashed it out, Game apologized and said it was one big miscommunication. Durant eventually donated his signature KD clothing and sneakers to Game’s summer league team. All is well that ends well.

One of my favorite shows I ever attended was J. Cole’s Dollar and A Dream Tour, the first go-around. I didn’t get the opportunity to see him on his second run. In my absence was Kevin Durant. KD has been known to show face at certain concerts, again proving that he’s engaged in the rap scene.

Durant continues to impress by appreciating the “underground” hip-hop scene and tweeting out lyrics from Drake’s artist PARTYNEXTDOOR. Make sure to follow the MVP on Twitter and hopefully you will learn a thing or two about the rap game.
