Our Icon this week is “YG the rapper don’t trip…” The 24-year-old rapper from B(c)ompton just released his debut album My Krazy Life, which sold over 61,000 copies in the first week. As Complex said in June, it’s time for Kendrick to move over, he’s not the only success story out of Compton. (Or Bompton, as YG calls it.)
Speaking of success stories, that’s what earns YG his spot as this week’s Icon. Coming from Bompton into stardom isn’t an easy task. YG makes sure listeners know some of the pleasures and struggles of Bompton through songs like “I Just Wanna Party” and “Sorry Mama.” The spectrum of content, attention to detail, and expressive pride, along with the album’s crazy beats, lead to one of the best projects of 2014 thus far.
YG’s loyalty and constant mention of Bompton serves as the epicenter for his unique flare and style. He comes from a city where your appearance represents your individuality. As his popularity increased, he’s sacrificed little, and in fact he is topping each previous outfit with a new one. No matter the array of color, you can always count on at least some red in his style. Case and point with this picture, the RVCA jacket and “Bompton” hat add the splash of color, not to mention the matching watch and classic Vans. He’s even global. In the image below, the homie is out in Germany rocking the Nike Cortez, the high socks, and the Bompton cap. He had the streets going crazy.
We wish YG the best going forward and hope with his most recent tour coming to a close, he is finding time to enjoy the rest he deserves.
