    Hey there, Tiger

“I’m shooting for Above The Ankle brand from the Philippines. They made the jogger that I’m wearing. Most of the time If I shoot for someone or collab, I take pictures for my page too. As I recall, it was five minutes before sunset when I saw a little bit of light reflecting from ten feet of white board at the back of an under-renovated fast food chain. Got my exposure right, set up the tripod, and put the camera in remote mode. The fit is basically to match the tiger camo jogger that I’m shooting, grey and army tone. Supreme beanie, Undefeated hoodie, Rothcho long sleeve, and adidas Ultra Boost. I UnDS my Ultra Boost that day. Man, those shoes are super comfy.”

    Above NYC shot

“(Laughs) This is a product of frustration of not having high rise building like these in our city. I’ve been wanting to do some rooftop shoots at that time but I don’t have connections so I end up shooting on a fifth floor parkade then ask Google, YouTube, and Photoshop’s help when I got home. I’m wearing the Y-3 Qasa High.”

    July 4th

“This was taken at Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. I’m trying to achieve an image that will fit the 4th of July, and I throw on the Kills Billions 5-Panel, which for me nailed the image. I setup my camera on a tripod almost on the ground, put on a wide angle lens to frame the whole scene like a map, and set the camera in timer mode.  I’m wearing a basic Tee from Topman, joggers from Publish Brand, and the Y-3 Qasa High again. I prefer to wear plain and mute colors when rocking this high Qasa colorway.”

    Overlooking the lake

“I’m trying to make a hypebeast version inspired by modern photographers in Instagram on this image (laughs). I had to climb up the top of where I’m sitting at to get this awesome view (roughly 100 feet). It was taken at Moraine Lake in Alberta, Canada, last summer. I’m wearing just the casual summer tourist fit, a plain Tee and shorts with a Vans Era x Mickey Mouse collab and a Supreme backpack.”

    Street

“(Laughs) This image took me almost three hours to get the shot I really wanted. I walked back and forth across the street many times to get the right step. I had to time my walk at the same time and try not to get hit by traffic. The shoot is a collab with Perspectives Global. The brand has sick images on their IG and website so I’m trying to come up with fresh ideas that they haven’t done yet. So I end up with this theme. I’m capturing traffic movements and at the same time incorporating the black mesh Tee that I’m wearing from them. I setup my camera on a tripod with zoom lens with neutral density filter, set it on continuous shooting mode, and used a wireless remote. I’m wearing Elwood French Terry Hem Tee under the black Tee, the back and black Skinny Lin Nudie Jeans, and, of course, Royals and yeah, the Kills Billions 5-Panel hat is here again.”

    Timbs

“To get this studio look environment, I used my thrift find big white sheet and open the window widely to gather enough light that pointed directly to the white sheet I’m sitting on enough to lit the whole scene. I’m wearing Undefeated hoodie, Alpha Industries bomber, Nudie Jeans that I destress myself, wheat Timbs, and Supreme 5 panel. The setup is basic, placed the tripod on top of the bed to get the bird’s eye view look, put on wide angle lens and used wifi to trigger the camera.”

    Three

“I’m trying to get a perfect symmetry on this image but the bridge itself is not symmetrical (laughs). Background and my fit is too simple; there was no streak of good light so I decided to add a trick. I took couples of shots and overlaid three images. I’m wearing the Jordan I Lance Mountain x Jordan Brand collab, Skinny Lin Nudie Jeans, Elwood Tee, Supreme 5-Panel, and the hoodie comes from Urban Outfitters.”

    Basic

“I was working on my framing technique at that time; if you’ll notice I included the beam and columns in my left and included the bike’s wheel to balance the scene. Good light is present too on this image. My fit is random here, don’t know how I came up to these (laughs). I’m wearing Huf 5-Panel, a Zara hoodie which I made myself inspired from Fear of God, Elwood Tee, Nudie Jeans, and adidas x Pharrell Supercolor, which is my favorite colorway from the collab.”

“In here, I’m trying to achieve a look book look. The coat has this fine and smooth texture that I wanted to showcase; that’s why I came up on combining two images. Behind the pose is to show the curved hem Tee as well. To achieve the studio look I had to use an off flash camera to overexpose the white wall in our kitchen and at the same time bounce that light coming from the flash. So it’s a one light off camera flash only. The key on this shot is positioning the flash and pointing it in right direction. On this case I placed my flash close to the wall but hidden by my other foot. The coat is from Scotch and Soda, with a hem Tee from Elwood, Nudie Jeans and true white Vans.”

    2X

“This is during winter and I just wanna rock my Fragments badly (laughs). I can’t shoot outdoor because of the weather and a bunch of snow. I can’t find a good symmetry so I stood between these columns to balance the scene. I’m not happy after this shoot because I didn’t get what I wanted but yeah this is the good one from the set.”

If you are a sneakerhead who likes to put up images of your kicks on Instagram, you must follow some rules to snap the perfect picture. One of the best in the game when it comes to snapping photos of sneakers is Benedict Aguilar.

Aguilar, who goes by the handle @Batangsmallville, is a freelance photographer currently living in Winnipeg, Canada. If you’re trying to up your IG sneaker game, he is a must follow. Aguilar’s images are compelling but you can tell that there is more to the process than just snapping pictures. It is all about the details, the aesthetic.

Born and raised in Manila, Aguilar found his inspiration when he got his hands on his grandmother’s digital point and shoot camera at around 16 years old and eventually focused on sneakers when he got hooked on Instagram and Tumblr.

Behind the lens, Aguilar is not only a major part of sneaker culture but is also helping grow the culture in Winnipeg. His participation in “Winnipeg’s Got Sole,” a non-profit charity that connects all sneakerheads in Winnipeg, provides a safe place where people can share the same passion they have for the culture.

Here at The Drop, we are all about helping you with various ways to stay fly and fresh, whether that is asking influencers on what to rock in the cold weather, talking to NBA stylists, or providing you with NBA players to follow when it comes to style tips. We had the opportunity to chat with Aguilar about some of the best shots on his Instagram page. Check him out in How to Take the Best Sneaker Pictures for Instagram.
