Dropping for the first time since releasing as part of the 2008 Collezione collection–where it was in a June pack with the Jordan XVI–the “Hare” colorway is routinely cited as one of the greatest Michael Jordan signature sneakers ever made. Complex once called it the 25th best Air Jordan ever made. It is often described as a “grail” sneaker among old school and long-time sneakerheads.
Why does everyone love the shoe? Well, when it first released in 1992 it was immediately recognizably different from the routine because of the tribal patterns on the neoprene tongue and outsole, as well as the white and off-white upper. All of that made the shoe unique, but a simple marketing campaign took it one step further. While the young cats out there might immediately think of Space Jam when they hear of Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan, this shoe actually had nothing to do with the movie. It had everything to do with a commercial.
To celebrate the original release of the VII over 20 years ago, the Jordan Brand launched an ad where Bugs and MJ came into a gym and shut down a pickup game. Jordan rocked the Bordeaux VII while the bunny held it down in the “Hare” VII.
Jordan and Looney Tunes sent the joint live during the Super Bowl that year and the ensuing response laid the foundation for a relationship that has lasted for a long, long time.
