Between the intricate lasering, the mid-foot strap, and that infamous ankle strap, the Air Jordan XX was about as polarizing as possible when it first released in February of 2005. Much of that reaction, I still believe, was that the sneaker was years ahead of its time.
Knowing the importance of a 20th signature shoe, legendary Jordan designer Tinker Hatfield returned to the fold to help with the design of the XX and then incorporated a palette of lasering designs that detailed key moments in Michael Jordan‘s career. Tinker used cycling shoes and motorcycle tires as inspiration, crafting a silhouette that not only used the velcro straps but also one that was built super low to the ground. I was never a huge fan of the launch colorway of the XX but it certainly hit its stride with the “Stealth,” a black-based joint that has to be considered one of the greatest laser Jordans ever made.
Now for the first time in what feels like forever, the “Stealth” colorway is finally coming back, releasing today at Champs Sports. It is the 30th anniversary for the team at Jordan Brand, and 2015 is going to be littered with a bunch of classic retros and new colorways, all of them a part of JB’s new “remastered” program. We’ve already seen a few hit hard during the early portions of this calendar year and that’s only going to continue the rest of the way.
The Air Jordan XX was way ahead of its time. Now the best colorway ever is hitting at the perfect moment. Get it before those spring pickup games start up.
