Over the years, Black Friday has morphed into a sneakerhead’s paradise–that is if you can deal with the crowds. Some of the most hyped shoes each calendar year drop on this day, including last year’s retro of the “Bred” Air Jordan VI, a sneaker Michael Jordan wore to win his first championship. Well, this year, the Jordan Brand might’ve topped themselves again. Today we’re seeing the release of the Air Jordan VIII “Aqua” colorway, one of the most memorable sneakers from the line.
Michael Jordan wore this sneaker during the 1993 NBA All-Star Game. Tinker Hatfield, the designer, called it an “explosion” of design, a bunch of ideas that came together in the form of mid-foot straps, a “Flower Power” tongue, a Huarache-inspired sockliner, a full-length Air sole, and one memorable “Punisher” nickname. And, honestly, that’s part of the sneaker’s appeal. While this sneaker isn’t as hyped up as some of its predecessors, it offers a unique take on a unique section of MJ’s career. Add in the fact that this is definitely the best colorway and you’re looking at a winner here.
Releasing on Black Friday at Champs Sports, the shoe is going to sell out before you can blink. A classic silhouette with an absolutely bananas colorway, it’s going to be hard for JB to top this release before the end of the year. (Though there is a certain Jordan XI model coming out in December that might have something to say about that.)
The “Aqua” edition of the Air Jordan VIII is a classic colorway that continues to get love over 20 years after its original release. And now it’s coming back. Again. It’s time to celebrate.
