Every Time He Lines Up For A Play

Sure, Rodgers has one of the most accurate throwing motions in the NFL, but it’s what he does before the ball is even snapped that makes him such a threat on the gridiron. Lined up under center with the defense barreling down on him, Rodgers is one of the best in the business at using a hard count to draw defenders off-sides or to simply reveal potential blitzers. The New York Times’ Ben Shpigel perhaps summed it up best, saying the following about Rodgers’ vocality: “Just as valuable an asset as his arm strength, mobility and microprocessor of a brain is Rodgers’s voice, loaded with bass and thump and a tinge of soul.”

Rodgers’ coaxing use of the word “hut” led to eight neutral-zone infractions through the first 11 games of the season. He has dedicated so much effort into improving his hard count that he even plays without a mouth guard in order to enunciate. Needless to say, he’s turning out to be a defensive lineman’s worst nightmare, instead of the other way around.

When He Told Everyone To “R-E-L-A-X”

Aaron Rodgers had what could possibly be the most swag-fueled moment of his career (so far) on the Tuesday following a September 21 loss to the Detroit Lions—a loss that dropped the Packers’ record to 1-2. That day, Rodgers went onto the airwaves of a local radio station and gave the anxious Packers faithful a much-needed spelling lesson. “Five letters here just for everybody out there in Packer-land: R-E-L-A-X,” Rodgers said on an ESPN Milwaukee radio show. “Relax. We’re going to be OK.”

Even with the entire Packer nation getting antsy and seemingly crumbling around him, wondering what was wrong with their MVP quarterback, Rodgers kept his cool and somehow knew that things would turn around sooner rather than later. After all, this season was the third consecutive in which Green Bay started 1-2, with the team making the playoffs in each of the past two years. So it should come as no surprise that, since No. 12 dropped that smooth line, he’s been playing like a man possessed, leading his team to an 8-1 record, including two monster games in which the Rodgers-led Packers offense scored 50-plus points in back-to-back weeks against Chicago and Philadelphia respectively. Through the first 12 games, Rodgers has thrown for 32 TDs and just three interceptions, and has a QB rating of 118.6. If that isn’t swag, we don’t know what is.

  • While Waiting Patiently in the NFL Draft Green Room

If you recall back to the 2005 NFL Draft, it was even tough for football fans and the media to watch the University of California prospect sit in the green room and watch player after player get drafted ahead of him, so you could only imagine how Aaron felt, right? Rodgers, who was projected to be drafted No. 1 overall by his childhood-favorite San Francisco 49ers, was passed on by 23 teams before he eventually fell into the hands of Green Bay. While it may have seemed like something out of a Greek tragedy back then, looking back at it today Rodgers was probably sitting there plotting his revenge against those who overlooked him.

Nearly a decade later, with an MVP award and a Super Bowl ring under his belt, and his team threatening for yet another shot at the Lombardi trophy, it’s safe to say that Rodgers has, in fact, had the last laugh. Though it’s worth noting that he’s not one to gloat—the true mark of swagger, if you ask us.

  • The Time He Threw Six TDs in One Half

Anytime any NFL record is tied or broken, you know that you have swagger. But when that record consists of throwing six touchdown passes in a single half, that swag-o-meter goes through the roof. This is precisely what happened when Rodgers shredded the Chicago defense for 315 yards and six TDs in the first half of a Week 10 thrashing of the rival Bears earlier this year, 55-14. For any haters out there wondering “Hey, it’s not like he broke the record, so what’s the big deal?” Well considering that the record for most total TDs thrown in a game is seven, and factoring in the reality that Rodgers watched from the sidelines during the entire second half, it’s a pretty darn impressive feat nonetheless. Had he played the entire game, he probably would have re-written the entire record book.

  • Every Time He Hits The “Discount Double Check”

What started out as a small, light-hearted gesture in a practice session during the Packers’ 2011 championship run quickly turned into a permanent swag symbol synonymous with Aaron Rodgers’ incredible skill. His “Discount Double Check” celebration took a life of its own that season and was cemented in football lore thanks to an eventual Super Bowl win by the Pack. The celebration, backed by Rodgers’ incredible play on the field, suddenly took a life of its own. Rodgers soon witnessed both teammates and players from opposing teams adopting his celebration after making big plays. One unfortunate defender even tore his ACL while trying to do the “belt” celebration after sacking Rodgers.

The “Discount Double Check” went on to make in impact even beyond the football field. It fueled a full-fledged State Farm advertising campaign with Rodgers at the helm. That type of influence is reserved solely for individuals with swagger.

No five letters have reverberated throughout the league louder this year than Aaron Rodgers‘ “R-E-L-A-X” message to Packers fans following a surprisingly slow start to the 2014 NFL season. Since that magical moment, Rodgers has been on an absolute tear, throwing for an astounding 32 touchdowns and just three interceptions, and leading his team to eight wins in the last nine games. As a result, his team sits pretty atop the NFC North once again, and all seems to be well in Green Bay. What I explained just now is called swag, and Aaron Rodgers has a lot of it. In fact, I’m going to take this moment to officially put Webster on notice that the word swag needs to be added to the dictionary with a picture of No. 12 alongside it.

OK, putting my unshakable love for the Green and Gold aside and taking a more realistic approach, I’m well aware that this will never come to fruition, but it should. Why? Because Rodgers is one of the most swagged-out human beings not just on the football field, but perhaps on the face of the earth. A guy that’s been underrated since he came into the league is now regarded as the best to ever do it—that’s no fluke either. You may be familiar with his skill and talent level by now, but something tells me that you’re still casting doubt on the man’s level of swag. Well I’m here to set the record straight.

With A-Rod ready to celebrate his 30th birthday, let’s take this moment to look back at 5 Moments When Aaron Rodgers Had More Swag Than Anyone on Earth.
