When it comes to sneakers, it doesn’t matter how many technological advances or bells and whistles come with the kicks. At the end of the day, if the sneaker does not look good, it will not sell. Fortunately for Nike, the KD 8 is a beautiful shoe and, as an added bonus, features the latest in Nike technology. Featuring another low-cut look, the KD logo on the tongue, and eye-popping volt/blue colorway, the “Hyper Cobalt” is a certified head turner.

    Flyweave technology

The KD 8 is the first basketball sneaker to feature the Swoosh’s latest and greatest technology. Flyweave helps keep the foot locked down and, as Nike describes it, acts as a bionic second skin. In layman’s terms, it makes for a comfortable fit and, combined with a full-length Zoom Air, should help support Durant’s fragile feet and weekend warriors’ bunions alike.

When Durant is at his best, he is arguably the most lethal player in basketball. With the ability to pull up in transition or beat his man off the dribble and finish at the rack, Durant’s offensive skill-set is unlike any “6-11” player in NBA history. With that, KD needs a responsive sneaker. He spoke on Nike’s “Prototype” podcast about the sneaker’s versatility.

“Having a shoe that allows me to do it all, especially with the new technology in the Flyweave, that feels like I’m locked down but it gives me flexibility, too,” says KD. “I gotta guard the point guard sometimes. I gotta switch out and guard a big man in the post and hold my ground. I gotta catch a lob, I gotta sprint up the court and make a bounce pass. I gotta switch directions and get out of a trap. I gotta do everything to help my team win.”

At 26 years old, KD already has his eighth signature sneaker and it’s time for all serious sneakerheads and collectors to start paying homage. When it’s all said and done, the KD 8 could be one of the most important in the line’s history as it will mark KD’s most important season, and, if the stars align, a second MVP award and first Larry O’Brien trophy. The last thing you’d want to do is get stuck because you got caught snoozing on release day.

    Comeback season

Coming back from an injury that derailed what should have been a year of his prime, Durant will have a lot of on-court questions to answer. Can he stay healthy? Can he return to pre-injury form? Will he be the leader after Russell Westbrook’s outstanding 2014-15 campaign? Nike has done everything to provide KD with a sneaker that will complement his game and hopefully protect his foot, now it’s on the player to perform. We’d be crazy to bet against him.

Hard to believe it, but Kevin Durant’s signature sneaker line is eight years old. The line has had its ups and downs and not every sneaker has been universally well received but three out of the last four (IV, VI, 7) editions have been hits and the Nike KD 8 appears to be the next successful sneaker in the superstar’s line. The KD 8 “Hyper Cobalt” edition, which drops, of course, today at Champs Sports, adds to the great array of colorways that have already dropped. Coming back from a dramatic foot injury that shortened his 2014-15 season and saw him infrequently wear the 7, all eyes will be on Durant’s feet in the upcoming season.

While the KD 7 is a tremendous looking sneaker and Nike’s string of colorways were some of the best of 2014, it’s no secret that Durant had fit issues with the sneaker. Super designer Leo Chang, who has recently designed kicks for KD and Kyrie Irving, amongst others, went back to the drawing board in the offseason and did a complete overhaul of the sneaker’s look. This is nothing new in the KD line; Durant has often switched up the design of his sneaker with each incarnation, which makes his sig one of the more compelling when it drops each year.

The KD 8 is already drawing rave reviews from wearers and with a ton of colorways dropping over the next 12 months, including the “Hyper Cobalt,” the sneaker is already shaping up to be another standout in Durant’s line.
