10 Things You Need to Know About the Nike KD 8

    1. Innovative design

With KD coming off a major foot injury, it was important that Nike came up with a sneaker that will accommodate him as much as possible. The KD 8 is the first Nike Basketball shoe to include a Flyweave upper and an articulated full-length Zoom Air unit. Both elements will provide the KD 8 with an incredible fit and enough versatility for KD to be comfortable. Combined with Flywire cables in the forefoot, the Flyweave locks your foot in like a seatbelt but responds as a second skin that will follow every one of his moves. The most important aspect of the shoe is the Nike Zoom Air unit that will help KD with responsive cushioning that will move naturally with his foot.

    2. Leo Chang is the man behind the design

MJ has Tinker Hatfield, Kobe has Eric Avar, and Kevin Durant has Leo Chang. Each player has built a close-knit relationship with their designer. And when it is all said and done, KD’s relationship with Chang, whose official title is “Nike Basketball Footwear Design Director,” is going to be high up in the rankings. Chang has led the creation of every single KD sneaker in the line and is also the man behind the Kyrie 1 and the Hyperdunk 2015.

    3. Saber-tooth tiger inspiration

It is amazing to think of some of the crazy inspirations behind some of the best regarded sneaker lines. MJ’s sneakers were inspired by everything from fighter jets, to cars and elephant skin. LeBron has had his sneakers inspired by the Hummer H2 he received out of high school and even the Grammys. KD’s line is no different in finding unique inspirations behind shoe design.

We covered ten things you wouldn’t expect to inspire KD sneakers back in February and the saber-tooth tiger inspiration might rank up there with the best. It is known that KD has a tattoo of one on his right calf and Leo Chang designed the heel of the KD 8 to mimic the fangs of one. The saber-tooth is the animal that KD likes to emulate on the court because he believes he is a “cold-blooded” killer.

    4. Colorways

Along with the unique storylines in KD’s sneaker line have come some great colorways. The KD 8 “V8” pulls inspiration from KD’s Camaro that he once owned and got customized in 2010. The colorway serves as memory of Durant’s hard work to afford a luxurious car.

Also released was the KD 8 “July 4th” colorway that represents his love for the holiday that he spends quality time with friends and family. You can also expect an Aunt Pearl edition that pays homage to his late Aunt who passed away in 2000. Durant put up a picture on Instagram that perhaps displays some other colorways that may be dropping soon.

    6. The gear

One of the best aspects of KD’s signature line is the gear that comes with it. KD is a big kid at heart and he is notorious for rocking a backpack and some exclusive Nike T-shirts. The entire line will include some great gear that features T-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, shorts, pants, hats, socks, and backpacks.

    7. Sales

While LeBron James remains king in the sneaker sales game after raking in $340 million worth of sales last year, KD came in a respectable second place with $195 million, according to Forbes. Durant is one of the most marketable players in the league and fans really gravitate towards him because of his laid-back and cool personality. It is a reason why his sneaker sales are always evolving year after year.

    8. OKC will have two signature players

Okay, I understand that Russell Westbrook’s debut signature model is perhaps not made for the court but it is regarded as his first signature sneaker. The Westbrook 0 is a model that will probably be a game-changer in the world of signature sneakers as we know it. With more lifestyle sneakers releasing for the casual look, you can expect to see more players going this route. If we are counting this, Durant and Westbrook joins LeBron James and Kyrie Irving as dynamic signature sneaker teammates.

    9. KD will play in them

The KD 8 model should not be a problem for KD this upcoming NBA season. With the innovations and technological advances backing this shoe, it is the perfect model for KD to go out and regain his strength as one of the game’s best. KD said, “When I first tested the KD 8, I instantly loved the springy response of the Zoom Air combined with the natural feel of the Flyweave. I didn’t want to take it off.”

One of the best bets you can make is that Kevin Durant will come back better than ever next season. Under new coach Billy Donovan and another year with Russell Westbrook, the Thunder should be early favorites to compete with the Warriors in the West.

Storytelling is a huge part of an athlete’s signature brand. Just look down the line of the Jordan Brand, LeBron’s or even Kobe’s madness that inspired the Kobe X. For Kevin Durant, his narrative took a slight turn last year as he battled with a Jones fracture in his foot that limited him to only 27 games last season. It was his worst year as a pro, despite making the All-Star team and putting up some respectable numbers.

On the court, KD shied away from wearing his KD7 silhouette from time to time after surgery. The shoes were beautiful by design but he started switching back to the KD 6 model because of extra padding he needed when playing. Nike issued a statement that the existing KD 6 shoe design was the best solution to accommodate his feet after the surgery. With a serious foot issue, the pressure was all on Nike and KD designer Leo Chang to craft the perfect shoe to comfort KD and limit his issues on the court.

The Nike KD 8 is regarded as KD’s most innovative sneaker within his line due to its creative inspirations and new innovations such as Flyweave and articulated Zoom Air. Durant is easily one of the Swoosh’s best brand ambassadors and with the second colorway of the Nike KD 8 releasing July 11 at Champs Sports it is going to be really interesting to see how KD’s newest shoes will elevate his line to the next level.
